Scholarships and Fellowships

These scholarships are available to undergraduate or graduate students who fit the criteria presented below. Students are encouraged to apply for these opportunities when notifications are sent out from the College of Arts & Sciences. This scholarship is for undergraduate student(s) in the Department of Biological Sciences in the College. Recipient(s) must have demonstrated financial need with preference given to a female student(s). This scholarship is renewable.

This fund was established to award annual scholarship to students in Botany, in honor of Dr. Harris M. Benedict, a much beloved Head of the Department who passed away in 1929. Although an ornithologist by training, Dr. Benedict was a botanical expert who was the advisor of Dr. E. Lucy Braun, considered to be one of the greatest botanists in the 20th century in North America.

Established in 1982 by the estate of Julia Hammler Wendel, this fund provides scholarships for economically disadvanged and worthy students as determined by the Dean and the head faculty member of the Department of Botany (now subsumed within Biological Sciences).

This fund, established in 2011 by Dr. Samir Patel, provides scholarship support for students majoring in biology. Dr. Patel is a proud Bearcat and wanted to give back to support students as they pursue their education and passion. He received his BS in Biology in 1991 and hopes to support students who share his passion for science and UC. 

The scholarship is awarded to Biological Sciences students who have completed the credit hours required to be considered a "Junior" or "Senior" in their undergraduate studies. The scholarship will be awarded based on merit, considering students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, with preference given to students planning to enter a career in medicine or professional research.

This scholarship was established in 2017 in memory of Kyle Dodson, a former A&S student who was posthumously awarded a BS in Biology in 2014. The scholarship is awarded to students who, like Kyle, are studying Biology and demonstrate strong qualities of character. Scholarships are provided to full-time undergraduate(s) entering their sophomore year or later who are majoring in Biology. Recipient(s) must have a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5, are not eligible for Pell Grants, and must demonstrate strong character including service to and compassion for others, a solid work ethic, and a personal commitment to and investment in achieving their university degree. Special consideration shall be given to students who demonstrate responsibility by covering an admirable portion of their college expenses.

Established in 2017 to honor Patricia O'Hern Bridle, this scholarship provides support for undergraduate students majoring in Biology. Pat received her BS in Biology from UC in 1979 and earned master's degrees in biology and business after leaving Cincinnati. This scholarship celebrates Pat's passion for science and her enthusiasm for others.  It is for a first year student who is a declared major in Biology, has a high school GPA of 3.75 or higher, demonstrated financial need greater than $15,000, a composite ACT score of at least 26, and is eligible for in-state or discounted tuition rates. For second to fourth year students, the recipient must have a declared major in Biology, a GPA of 3.5 or higher, demonstrated financial need greater than $10,000, and be eligible for in-state or discounted tuition rates.

This scholarship honors Dr. Stacy Pfaller, a first generation PhD graduate of our department who went on to a successful career as a microbiologist and EPA scientist. Dr. Pfaller was known for her beliefs in and passion for science , her love of family and friends, and her desire to treat every living thing with love and respect. This scholarship is for individuals like Stacy: first generation PhD graduate students with a preference given to female students. The intent is to inspire future scientists to presevere, continue to learn, to mentor, and collaborate with others.

The scholarship is awarded to Biological Sciences students who are working toward a graduate degree, in addition to undergraduate students (see above). The scholarship will be awarded based on merit, considering students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students planning to enter a career in medicine or professional research.
