Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the purpose of the test?

A: To identify UC mathematics courses that best match your current math skill.

Q: Who has to take the test?

A: All students planning to enroll in an entry-level math course. This includes transfer students and students with AP credit.

Q: When do I take the test?

A: Since the test is taken on-line, you can take the test at your convenience via Blackboard. However, the Orientation Office posts a schedule for the spring semester in order to even out the load on the server. Ultimately, you must complete the MPT before you can register for classes. In particular, if you are coming to Student Orientation, you need to take it before you arrive!

Q: When will I know the results?

A: The program displays your score immediately at the end of the test. Qualifying scores for entry-level math courses at UC are listed on-line.

Q: What does the Math Placement Test cover?

A: Material traditionally covered in high school courses titled Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. For more details, see Topics Covered. Also, look at the Sample Questions.

Q: How long is the test?

A: Most students finish within 50 minutes. During that time you will see at most 25 questions. The program draws a conclusion more quickly for some people than others, so the actual time and number of questions vary from person to person.

Q: Can I use a calculator on the test? What else will I need?

A: You need only a pencil and paper. The use of calculators is not permitted.

Q: Is there a deadline for taking the test?

A: Yes. You must complete the test before registering for classes.

Q: Is there a charge for the test?

A: No.

Q: I didn't do as well as I expected on the test. Can I take it again?

A: Yes. If you believe that the results of your initial MPT test do not accurately reflect your math abilities, then you may re-take the test one time after waiting at least three weeks (21 days). The higher of your two scores will be used. Re-takes are handled by the Testing Services Office, and information on re-taking the MPT can be found at https://www.uc.edu/testingservices/mptschoolyr/mpt-retake-information.html. Under extraordinary circumstances, a student may be able to get permission to take the test a third time by contacting the Math Department's Director of Entry Level Mathematics at (513) 556-4055.

Q: Can I use the test to "place out of" a math course at UC?

A: No.

Q: Must I take the test if I already have a placement result from another school?

A: Yes. Courses vary from institution to institution.
