LACI GRAY

Name: Laci Gray

LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/laci-gray

Hometown: Morehead City, North Carolina

Undergraduate degree(s):

University of North Carolina at Greensboro 2021, major: psychology, minors: creative writing and Spanish, graduated with full university honors

Work experience:

I have experience working as a caregiver to an autistic adult. I also have experience working as a cognitive brain trainer for LearningRx. I have volunteer experience working in several non-profit food pantries including CAIN Food Pantry in Cincinnati, OH.

Interest area: Community Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track?

My interests change all the time but something that always remains the same is the passion I have to serve communities and make change at the local level. I love hearing unique stories from people with different backgrounds and identities and community psychology really fosters that diversity.

Why the MAP program?

I was really excited about the hands-on kind of work that I would be doing in the MAP program. The capstone piece was very appealing because I knew I would gain field experience. I am also pleasantly surprised with how much of the course work is hands-on, field experience.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

I want to work in non-profit management. Currently, my interest is in serving the food-insecure, so I hope to find myself in a director position at a non-profit where I can meet these people where they are.

KATHERINE BALTRUSCH

Name: Katherine Baltrusch

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-baltrusch-01409a24b/

Hometown: West Chester, OH

Undergraduate degree(s):

University of Cincinnati, April 2022, Major-Neuroscience, Minor-English, Certificate-Forensic Populations

Work experience:

I began working as the Pet Support Aide for Found House Interfaith Housing Network's Pet Support Program in August of 2021. Our program works to provide emergency shelter for the pets of those who are experiencing homeless or some other form of crisis such as hospitalization, rehabilitation, or incarceration, as well as to provide resources such as pet food and veterinary care to low-income pet owners in the community.

Interest area: Community Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track?

Throughout my life, I have been exposed to and witnessed the struggle of many individuals with mental health problems. With the changing times, our community seems to be more open and willing to talk about these issues, which have been dealt with for too long on a personal/individual level. People are freer in their discussions of issues such as addiction, mental health, and trauma, and with this openness comes an awareness of how these issues are not simply the result of individual differences but may be influenced by social, cultural, economic, or political influences. Therefore, to promote change in the individual, something must be done at the community level. My interest in Community Psychology stems from my desire to affect change regarding psychological issues at the systemic level rather than at the individual level.

Why the MAP program?

As a one-year program, the MAP Program is an amazing option for those who are eager to begin their professional work in the field of psychology. The curriculum has a nice balance of more traditional, academic based work as well as options for applied learning, which really sets its students up for success in their desired field post-graduation. Additionally, the relatively small size of the cohorts is amazing in that it really allows for the development of a sense of community amongst its students, which is something that is difficult to establish within a larger program.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

After graduating, I hope to engage in the research and development of better treatment programs for incarcerated women. Many of the treatment programs in prisons today were developed based on studies of incarcerated men. Although research has shown that the risk factors for offending are different for men and women, there has not much movement towards the development and implementation of treatment programs designed to address the factors that are unique for women. So, I hope to engage in this work to help combat this issue and help ensure that the needs of this vulnerable demographic of women are being met.

Why are you interested in that specific track?

The organizational track allowed me to pair my interest in business, strategy, and psychology into one degree. After working in HR, I see the true value of organizational psychology and look forward to making an impact internally or externally on the systems and processes that support employees at work.

Why the MAP program?

Completing the 4+1 program at UC solidified my decision to pursue the MAP program. As a 4+1 student I had the chance to take two classes focused on I/O Psychology and immediately fell in love. The faculty at UC deeply care about students’ success and do everything in their power to help us achieve. They have great resources in terms of research, connections, and community partners to assist us in our time here and beyond. As a student you can complete your degree within one year while getting lots of hands-on experience in your desired track be it organizational or community. Cohorts are also kept small so you feel like you can develop connections with those around you.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

After graduation I hope to work in either human resources or consulting. Within HR I’ve taking special interest in employee relations and benefits. Within consulting I am interested in business and management specifically focusing on human resources, transformation & change management, DEI, or organizational development. I am not tied to Cincinnati and look forward to the opportunity to potentially relocate for future job opportunities. Eventually I would like to see myself working for an international company incorporating my MAP degree and international business certificate to manage across cultures and assess workplaces outside of the US.

Why are you interested in that specific track?

In today’s fast-paced society, change in the workplace is constant and necessary. Given the significant amount of time individuals spend in the workplace, it is important to me that the changes made make it safe and satisfying for all. Ultimately, I chose the MAP program to guide me in expanding my knowledge, skills, and abilities in improving community-based programs and policies.

Why the MAP program?

As an undergraduate at UC, I found the faculty, staff, and students within the Psychology department to be wonderful systems of support for my learning and achievement. This was a crucial factor to me as a first-generation student. For a long time, I doubted whether I belonged in higher education. However, through their attention to experience-based learning, I was able to develop confidence in my own abilities. Everyone in the Psychology department has had a heavy hand in making me the individual I am today, for which I am endlessly grateful. When I was accepted into the MAP program, it was a clear choice to further my education with folks that genuinely wanted to help me succeed.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

After earning my Master’s, I intend to continue my education at the PhD level. Although it is just a starting place, my current research interests involve how imposter syndrome affects success in a team environment. In the long-term, I want to become an expert research-based consultant working to evaluate organizations and programs. After I gain significant experience with research and applied consulting work (we are talking long-long-long-long-term goal), I want to inform workplace policy at a local, state, and federal level. Ultimately, my life-long goals are to have a positive impact on the individuals and world around me.
