Carl Bryant won the Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program Award for the third time and gave the lecture “Social Justice and Leadership” at the Union Institute.

Michael Gott co-edited with Thibaud Schilt, Open Roads and Closed Borders: The Contemporary French-language Road Movie. Bristol, Chicago: Intellect / U. of Chicago Press. He also published one article in Contemporary French Civilization, one in Transfers: Interdisciplinary Journal of Mobility Studies; and one in Modern and Contemporary France.

Carlos Gutiérrez presented papers at the 67th annual RMMLA convention, U. of Colorado, Boulder; and at the Cervantes Symposium, Instituto Cervantes, in Chicago.

Fenfang Hwu  co-authored an article with C. Tzseng, “Challenges and directions of script-based tracking in tutorial CALL,” published in Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium.

Irene Ivantcheva-Merjanska published an article on Julia Kristeva and co-edited Kristeva in Process: The Fertility of Thought. La pensée féconde. Die Fruchtbarkeit des Denkens. Special issue of Cincinnati Romance Review.

Eva Krieg won the Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program Award.

Kathryn Lorenz was an invited participant at the New York Times Conference on the Future of the University, and she also participated in the annual ACTFL conference.

Jeff Loveland published “Encyclopaedias and Genre, 1670-1750” in Journal for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and co-authored two articles published in Recherches sur Diderot et sur l’Encyclopédie and New Media & Society.

Thérèse Migraine-George published her book, From Francophonie to World Literature in French: Ethics, Poetics, and Politics. Lincoln and London: University of Nebraska Press.

María Paz Moreno published her article “Querido Juan: Contesto a tu carta…La correspondencia inédita de Salvador Moreno a Juan Gil-Albert” in Auca.

Patricia Valladares-Ruiz co-edited El tránsito vacilante: Miradas sobre la cultura venezolana contemporánea Amsterdam and New York: Rodopi. She also published “Desplazamiento y disenso político en la narrativa de Eduardo Sánchez Rugeles” in Inti and “Memoria histórica y lucha de clases en el nuevo cine venezolano” in Revista Hispánica Moderna.

Michèle Vialet co-authored an interview of Julia Kristeva that appears in Kristeva in Process: The Fertility of Thought. La pensée féconde. Die Fruchtbarkeit des Denkens. Enrique Giordano co-organized a Sympsiun on Sara Montiel, with the presence of the Spanish diva Sara Montiel in the UC Campus. He organized a panel and presented papers at the Midwest MLA and at our Conference on RomanceLanguages and Literatures.

Carlos Gutiérrez was promoted to professor last year. He co-authored a 171 pp. study commissioned by the Int. Association of Golden Age Scholars (AISO). It was presented at 2012 AISO held in Poitiers, France, and published in Etiópicas. He also gave a talk on Quevedo in Lima, Peru.

Janine Hartman co-Edited and translated In the Sphere of Humanity:Joseph Dejacque, Slavery and the Struggle for Freedom. E-Book, UC Digital Resource Commons.

Fenfang Hwu was chosen to be a selected plenary speaker and given the Best Plenary Speaker Award at the International Computer-Assisted-Language-Learning Research Conference. She also published a referred article in System.

Nuria López-Ortega presented three papers at the World Languages Symposium, University of Cincinnati, March 2012; the Cincinnati Romance Languages and Literatures Conference and the Conference on Teaching with Technology (3T Conference) at Clermont College.

Andrés Pérez-Simón attended the The Mellon School of Theater and Performance Research at Harvard this summer. He also presented on Lorca’s The Public at the American Comparative Literature conference, organized a round table on Hispanic modernism at the MMLA conference, and published an essay on a recent staging of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba in Theatralia / Yorick.

Noris Rodríguez presented a paper at our Cincinnati Conference on Romance Languages and Literatures.

Armando Romero published the book of poems Amanece Aquella Oscuridad (Editorial Sibila, España). Two anthologies of his poetry, and two editions of his novel Cajambre, Ediciones B, Bogotá, and Editorial Difacil, Valladolid), as well as the Italian translation by Sinopia Libri, Italy.

Siusan Sinclair taught in Spain two courses during the Fall semester under USAC (University Study Abroad Consortium).

Patricia O'Connor translated Ana Diosdado's play, Yours for the Asking (Vd. también podrá disfrutar de ella), which opened in London at the Orange Tree Theater, published an article in  Estreno and gave a paper in June at the Convention of the Asociación Hispánica de Humanidades in Madrid.

Professor Carlos Gutierrez published "Quevedo y los poetas norteamericanos contemporáneos" in the peer reviewed journal Perinola. He also presented one paper on Cervantes at University of Pennsylvania, and read from his short stories "La red ciega"at the Kentucky Foreign Languages Conference.

Educator Professor Kathryn Lorenz completed work on the online Instructor Resource Manual for the newest edition of Points de départ, a French textbook published by Pearson Publishing.  Lorenz serves as a Faculty Mentor for the online MyFrenchLab program for Pearson French textbooks.

Associate Professor Fenfang Hwu presented two papers last year: "Aptitude-Treatment Interaction Effects on the Learning of Grammar Rules: A Latent Growth Curve Analysis" at the American Educational Research Association Conference, in Denver, and at the Cincinnati Conference in Romance Languages and Literatures.

Associate Professor Therese Migraine-George published her novel "Amour de travers" (Paris: Editions Edilivre). She been on a sabbatical researching a new book of literary criticism on academic leave with a Taft Fellow Grant.

Associate Professor Maria Paz Moreno published one paper in the proceedings of the meeting of the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas, and a prologue to a book about Gil-Albert. She also published two book reviews, one in our Review and another one in Periodico de poesia. She presented papers at the University of Utah, University of Texas, San Antonio and the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference. She performed three readings of her poetry, and her poetry was included in the important anthology La luz escondida. During winter and spring 2011 she was on leave with a Taft Researh Fellowship and produced a book of poetry, El vientre de las iguanas. As the Spanish editor of Cincinnati Romance Review, she coedited issue #32, Fall 2011. (Available at: http://www.cromrev.com/) and is currenty working on editing a forthcoming monographic issue on Culinary Literature in the Hispanic World. Her new scholarly book is coming out soon: Mucho más que recetas. Cómo leer un libro de cocina. The book is currently in press and will see the light in early 2012.Dr. Moreno also published two articles: "A Bittersweet Love Affair: Spain and the History of Chocolate". Connections. Professor Armando Romero published one article "Un caballero andante por América" about Eduardo Caballero Calderón in the Colombian journal Aleph, and one book chapter about Nadaismo in Colombia. He also co-authored an article with Floriano Martins in his journal Agulha hispánica. This year he also saw the publication of the translation of one book of poems into Greek.

More recently, she completed a book chapter ("Genealogía de una intermitencia: Subjetividades afrodescendientes en la literatura venezolana contemporánea") and co-edited with Leonora Simonovis a collection of essays, Nuevas tendencias temáticas y estéticas en la cultura venezolana del nuevo milenio (book manuscript under review). In 2012, she also published her book Sexualidades disidentes en la narrativa cubana contemporánea (Tamesis Books).

Professor Michèle Vialet presented four papers at conferences, including the South Atlantic Modern Languages Association, Le Conseil International d'Etudes Francophones in Montreal, the Kentucky Foreign Languages Conferences and the African Literature Association.

Pascale Abadie successfully defended her dissertation entitled “Vers de nouveaux horizons dans la littérature féminine d’Afrique sub-saharienne: de Mariama Bâ à nos jours” and was appointed Assistant Professor of French atWright State University, beginningin Fall 2014.

Stephanie Alcantar published her poetry book Humedad de la nostalgia, which she presented in Mexico and Colombia. She was included in the anthology Ríos paralelos. 7 poetas latinoamericanos.

Aurelio Auseré gave two conference presentations, one at Diálogos 11 Graduate Student Research Conference 2014 and the Ohio Latin Americanist Conference.

Paola Cadena atended the “Encuentro Internacional de Poetas en Zamora,” México, 2013 and the Conference “Video Verso(s) Un encuentro poético. Valladolid, Spain, 2014.

Marina Coma gave two conference presentations. One at Diálogos 11: Graduate Student Research Conference 2014, University of Indiana, and another one at the XIII International Conference of the British Comparative Literature Association, University of Essex, UK.

Luis Miguel Estada published his collection of short stories: Alain Prost. Guadalajara: Ediciones Arlequín.

Mar Gámez gave a conference presentation at Diálogos 11: Graduate Student Research Conference 2014 at Indiana University.

Manuel Ramos published “Pierre Casares, artífice de “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbius Tertius” in FILHA, a journal edited by the Facultad de Filosofía e Historia de las Ideas de la Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas, issue #10.

Alexander Weil gave a conference presentation at the 14th Annual Purdue University Graduate Student Symposium, which was entitled Merging Borders on March 7, 2014.

Etienne Achille published an article in French Forum, presented one paper, and published three book reviews in the French Review.

PhD student Manuel Iris is a contributor to the journal "El Grito de las Ideas," where he has recently published essays and interviews. Iris serves also on the editorial board of the journal Transatlantic, published jointly by UC and University of Valladolid, Spain.

Doctoral student Patricia Marín co-edited the book "Sic vos non vobis. Estudios de atribución y plagio" (Madrid: Iberoamericana, 2010, 384 pp., ISBN 9788484895114). She also found time to successfully defend her first PhD dissertation at University of Valladolid, Spain. She is pursuing a second doctorate with us.

MA student Milton Medellín published the volume "No cesará el desvelo" (Tlaxcala, Mexico, 2010), featuring the poems that were previously awarded the Dolores Castro poetry prize.

Doctoral student Clemencia Sánchez published a new poetry book, "Paraiso precario" (Universidad Externado de Colombia, 2010). It will be widely distributed in her native Colombia. The first edition has a print run of 8,000 copies.

We are also happy to announce the publication of books by two of our alumni: "Lecturas desplazadas. Encuentros hispanoamericanos con Cervantes y Góngora" (Caracas, 2009) by Arturo Gutiérrez and Marcelo Rioseco's "Espejo de enemigos" (Uqbar, 2010), a poetry book. Both were written during their stay at UC.

During 2010 three doctoral students graduated with remarkable dissertations Rafael García currently at Martin University; Oscar Rodriguez-Bazan teaches at Clemson University, and Paul N. Toure, currently at University of Houston. At the MA level we had three graduates from the French section and four graduates from the Spanish section.

In terms of visiting scholars we had an outstanding year. Four internationally known scholars visited our department and lived with us for 10 weeks at the time. Floriano Martins from Brazil, famous historian of surrealism; Pedro Lastra from Chile, great critic and poet emeritus from Stony Brook University; Pilar Celma from Universidad de Valladolid, the world expert on Castilian writer Miguel Delibes; and Javier Blasco, whose work on Juan Ramn Jiménez has made him famous.
