Undergraduate Fellowship

The Portman Center for Policy Solutions is committed to cultivating student civic leaders, through a mentored scholarship program for undergraduates with demonstrated potential for to make an impact on campus, in Cincinnati, and across the country. The first cohort of Portman Center Fellows started in January 2024, and future classes will be selected through an application process each Spring, beginning their term with the start of the next academic year. 

2024–25 Undergraduate Fellows

Luc Balson

Luc is a third-year student from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is majoring in Political Science and Finance, with a certificate in War Peace and Security. He is a delegate in Model United Nations and spent the summer of 2023 studying abroad in the United Kingdom.

Priscilla Caballero

Priscilla is an incoming fourth-year student from Southgate, Kentucky. She is a Cincinnatus Scholar, McNair Scholar, and proud Darwin T. Turner Scholar who is majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology with a certificate in Law and Paralegal Studies. Priscilla is the President of OIP-u, President of the Pre-Law Club, Vice President of UC Women in Law, Treasurer for the Darwin T. Turner Ambassadors, and is an active member of CWEST Women’s Honorary.

Alexander Caldwell

Alexander is a first-year student from Newtownards, Northern Ireland. He is majoring in Political Science and is a member of Model United Nations.

Leen Ciba

Leen is a second-year student from Manitoba, Canada. She is a UC Global Scholar with a History major (Religion and Culture concentration), an Arabic minor, and a Middle Eastern Studies certificate. Leen is the Treasurer of the UC Mock Trial Association, and the Social Media Director of the UC Model United Nations. She is also a proud member of the University Honors Program and the UC Muslim Student Association.

Morgan Dalton

Morgan is a fourth year from Cleveland, Ohio. She is a Cincinnatus Scholar and a University Honors Student majoring in Political Science with a War, Peace, and Security certificate. She is the co-founder and Vice President of Plaid for Pops, a peer facilitator for the Learning Commons, and conducts research on voting trends.

Mallika Desai

Mallika is a third-year student from Miamisburg, Ohio. She is a NEXT Innovation Scholar and Cincinnatus Scholar and is majoring in Medical Sciences with a certificate in Innovation and Medical Humanities. She is founder of the nonprofit Parkinson’s Together, President of College Companions, and conducts cardiothoracic surgery research. 

Ingrid Fretz

Ingrid is a second-year from Elkhart, Indiana. She is a Cincinnatus Scholar at UC  majoring in Political Science and minoring in History. She is a member of the University of Cincinnati's Swim and Dive Team. She is also a board member of the IEC (Inspire, Equip, Connect) Club for Female Student Athletes. 

Natalie George

Natalie is a second-year student from Cleveland, OH. She is a Cincinnatus Scholar and Trailblazer Scholar majoring in Business Economics with plans to double major in Political Science. She’s a part of the Economics Society and UC Club Softball Team. On campus she is a Resident Advisor, Teaching Assistant, and PACE Leader.

Cameron Hawkins

Cameron is a first-year student from Carmel, Indiana. She is majoring in Political Science and is a Darwin T. turner Scholar. She is a recipient of the Cincinnatus Century Scholarship and the Buxbaum Workum Scholarship.

Christina Horn

Christina is a third-year student from Findlay, Ohio. She is a Cincinnatus scholar pursuing a major in Political Science with a minor in Spanish and a certificate in Social Justice. She is an off-campus community ambassador for the Center for Community Engagement, a peer leader for the Learning Commons, and an undergraduate student grader for the School of Public and International Affairs. She also volunteers locally as a tutor for students at Hughes STEM High School.

Jacob Lesick

Jacob is a fourth-year from Rossford, OH. He is set to graduate in the Spring with a B.A. in Political Science, a minor in Economics, and a certificate in War, Peace, and Security. Jacob is a CYBERCORPS Scholar, Drum Major in the UC Bearcat Bands, Vice President of Involvement of the UC Band Council, Chairman of the Governmental Relations Committee in Student Government, and member of Tau Beta Sigma, Pi Sigma Alpha, and Sigma Sigma.

Tokhirjon Otakhonov

Tokhirjon is a first-year student from Namangan, Uzbekistan. He is majoring in Law and Society. He is an International Outreach Scholar at UC. He is also an El-Yurt Umidi Foundation Scholar in Uzbekistan. He speaks Uzbek, Russian, and English. He was a former English language tutor at Algoritm education center in Uzbekistan. 

Jay Patel

Jay is a second-year student from West Chester, Ohio. He is a Cincinnatus scholar and is majoring in Medical Sciences and Liberal Arts. He conducts molecular and cancer biology research at the Vontz Center and is the founder and president of the Dahyabhai Foundation.

Emma Spriggs

Emma is a fourth-year political science student on the pre-law track from North Olmsted Ohio. She is a member of the Honors Program and is minoring in sports administration, complemented by certificates in legal studies and social justice. Emma is the Co-President of the College of Arts and Sciences Ambassador Program, Vice President of the Ohio Innocence Project-U, member of the women in law club, and member of CWEST Honorary.

Serene Tarabishi

Serene is a second-year student from Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a Cincinnatus Scholar at UC and is majoring in Law and Society with a double minor in French and Arabic, as well as a certificate in Middle Eastern Studies. She is Fundraising Chair for UC Model UN Club, as well as a member of the Muslim Student Association and UC Women in Law Club. 

Louis Weiss

Louis is a second-year undergraduate student from Youngstown, Ohio. He is a Cincinnatus Scholar at UC with a major in Political Science (Gender and Multicultural Politics) and a minor in Anthropology on a Pre-Law track. He is a proud member of UC's Mock Trial team and an intern at the Ohio Innocence Project. He studied abroad in The Netherlands and Belgium following the Spring Semester of 2023. There, he wrote a research paper on the rise of the populist radical right and the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union.

Lela Walker

Lela is a second-year student from Cincinnati, Ohio. She is majoring in Political Science and Journalism, with a certificate in Non-Profits and Community Leadership. She is a proud Darwin T. Turner Scholar, Mentor, and Ambassador, as well as a UHP Ambassador. She is also involved in the United Black Student Association as the Co-Education Chair and The News Record as an Opinion Contributor. On campus, she currently works as a program assistant for the UC Women's Center and a research assistant within the College of Arts and Sciences.
