Double-degree students can take any remaining required WGSS-offered graduate electives during their third or fourth years in their doctoral programs to complete their 30-credit minimum for the MA)

Note: If an MA student was a UC undergraduate who took WGSS courses (whether or not as major or minor in WGSS), graduate electives cannot be graduate versions of undergraduate courses already taken, with the exception of Graduate Internship. Dual-degree (MA/JD) and double-degree (MA/PhD) students must consult with advisors in both their programs when selecting electives. All MA students must consult with the WGSS Graduate Director when choosing courses each term. Students may pursue a specialty in either Sexuality or Transnational Feminist Studies within the MA. See WGSS Graduate Director for determining which electives are needed.

Requirements for 4+1 MA

4+1 Graduate Year

Note: 4+1 students must plan carefully with the WGSS Undergraduate Director to take 2-3 graduate level courses as undergraduates while also completing their BA degrees. Like all WGSS MA students, 4+1 students are required to take a total of 30 graduate credit hours to complete the MA degree program. 4+1 students will receive a 25% GIA (tuition remission) during their fifth year as a graduate student in the one-year MA program. Students pursing the 4+1 MA degree without GIA support (25% tuition remission) can take fewer credits per semester but must still complete a total of 30 credit hours to complete the MA degree. 4+1 students are strongly recommended to consult with the WGSS Graduate Director for course selection advising for each semester, beginning as an undergraduate. Undergraduate UC WGSS majors wishing to apply to this program must consult the WGSS Undergraduate Director by the beginning of their junior year and are strongly advised to work with both the Undergraduate and Graduate Director to complete all course requirements.

Total Graduate Credits for 4+1: 18-23 semester credits

Note: Any students with GA and/or GAS/other scholarship funding must take a minimum of 12 semester credits for full-time status in any semester in which they have funding. In such cases, particularly in the second year of the MA, optional electives are required and maximum credits should be taken for courses with variable credit values (e.g. MA Project and Oral Exam courses). Such students will exceed the minimum credit requirements for the MA. Those full-time students without GA/GAS funding must take a minimum of 10 credits per semester. Particularly during the second year of the MA, unfunded students should opt for the lowest credit values in variable credit courses and need not take the optional electives unless they are needed for their dual or double degree programs. Dual degree students should contact those departments as well for advising and dual/double degree templates. MA/JD students should take the MA Project and Oral Exam sequence during their third year of the 4-year MA/JD and complete their projects and exam in that period. MA/JD students should contact the College of Law for JD course advising. Double degree students should also take the MA Project and Oral Exam sequence in a given year and should complete their projects and exam in that same year (preferably their second or third years). Double degree (MA/PhD) students must also avoid “double-counting” required credits for separate degree programs, whereas students in the MA/JD dual degree program may count up to 8 WGS classroom credits to their JD after the first year of law). All MA students are also expected to participate in non-credit activities, such as attending public lectures and other events.
