Multiple Areas of Study

The College of Arts and Sciences highly encourages students to choose more than one area of study. There are usually enough elective credit hours in your degree program to accommodate at least one of the following. In fact, many classes count toward multiple programs, allowing you to "double dip" and thereby reduce the number of courses required to complete the program.

A double major occurs when an Arts & Sciences student has two A&S majors. Students must complete the A&S core requirements and the major requirements for both majors in order to graduate. Students may "double dip" common courses of the majors. Students graduate with one degree (BA, BS or BIS) and two areas of concentration.

A minor is an academic program generally made up of 22 credit hours. Minors are a compacted version of a major. Minors must be completed before or at the same time as you earn your bachelor's degree. A&S students may earn a minor from the College of Arts and Sciences  or another college, and students often have more than one minor and/or certificate. A certificate is an academic program generally made up of 22 quarter credit hours. Certificates are often interdisciplinary and a similar major does not exist.

Some certificate programs are designed to provide specialized programs for people who already have a degree; others are for people who want to complete a program that leads directly to a specific job quickly.

For students who are enrolled in a baccalureate program may complete a certificate as part/all of elective credit hours. The certificate must be completed before or at the same time as you earn your bachelor's degree.

A&S students may ean a certificate the College of Arts and Sciences or another college, and students often have more than one certificate and/or minor. A list of A&S certificates is available on the Academic Programs page.

Students who wish to graduate with two degrees (BA, BS, BIS) are enrolled in a degree program in another UC college as well as in an A&S degree program. They will graduate with two degrees and two areas of concentration.

Students seeking a dual degree must announce their intentions to A&S, complete all requirements as outlined by the A&S core requirements, and also complete all of the major requirements in an A&S department.

At the same time, the student must complete all course work required by their second UC college in order to receive their degrees.

Students can "double-dip" some of the requirements for both colleges. They only need one sequence of English composition, for example.

Students who wish to graduate with a primary degree (BA, BS) and major in another college are allowed to pursue a second major in A&S. Students complete the core requirements for their home college and major, as well as the major requirements for the A&S major.
