Why study Germanic Languages and Literatures?

The PhD in German Studies provides extensive training in German culture and history in various media. The program aims to educate future German Studies teachers and scholars. A concept-based curriculum is focused on genres, media, methodologies, and themes, among other categories. This approach to German speaking cultures reflects current trends in the teaching and research of cultural texts in various media, offering students appropriate coursework to acquire the knowledge and the analytical skills necessary for the assessment and the interpretation of these cultural texts. The program has foci on Film and Media Studies, Austrian Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, German-Jewish Studies, Disability Studies, History of Science and Postcolonial Studies.

Our program prepares our students for different careers that require skills in critical thinking, communication, and an in-depth familiarity with a foreign language and culture. The majority of graduates from our PhD program go into academic careers. Their success in attaining jobs in a highly competitive environment is a direct result of our attempts to prepare our graduate students for careers in different teaching environments, ranging from small liberal arts colleges to large research universities. Our PhD prepares our students perfectly for an academic carrer as well as alt ac-careers like translators, publishers, curators.

Admission Requirements

• BA-degree or foreign equivalent
• GRE scores
• 3 letters of recommendation
• Transcripts
• For students whose first language is not English: TOEFL scores
