Why study Film and Media Studies?
Film & Media Studies is a collaborative interdisciplinary graduate certificate that provides a critical understanding of film, television, and digital media that integrates history, theory, and praxis. It studies all aspects of media culture, from the first cinematic shorts to digital media. The field combines both academic study and hands-on experience with visual media.
Admission Requirements
Any student in good standing in a UC graduate degree program qualifies. Students who are not enrolled in another UC graduate program but who hold a bachelor's degree may also apply.
Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Program Director in Film and Media Studies and consist of: (1) a statement of purpose, (2) transcripts, and (3) either a letter of support from the student's graduate program director (for students already enrolled in a UC graduate program) or (for external applicants) a letter of recommendation that speaks to the applicant's potential for success in the Film and Media Studies graduate certificate program.
Successful students in this certificate program possess a creative, visual learning style. They enjoy exploring new forms of art and thinking critically about the world.

The graduate certificate in Film & Media Studies unites faculty and students from three Colleges (A&S, CCM, and DAAP) in order to offer students training in both theory and practice. UC's strengths in media production and in visual studies combine to offer students hands-on experience in production along with training in the analysis of media and visual culture.
Any student in good standing in his or her graduate program qualifies. Applications will be made to the Director of Film Media and Visual Studies.
