Why study Copyediting and Publishing?
The Certificate in Copyediting and Publishing is designed for students interested in the production and delivery of both print and digital texts. Students who complete the certificate will earn a credential with easily recognizable value in the publishing world, preparing them to become skilled copyeditors, editorial assistants, and publishing professionals who can compete in a diverse local and national marketplace that includes editing opportunities in book publishing, literary and trade publications, online content editing, and corporate communications.
Admission Requirements
Students already pursuing a degree in any college at UC can add the certificate to their program. Be sure to submit a declaration of the certificate program using our online form.
In addition, you must meet with the program director so that they are aware that you are pursuing the certificate and can advise you appropriately. Do this early enough to avoid delay in obtaining your certificate.
Students not currently pursuing a degree may declare the certificate after establishing non-matriculated status.
In addition to Copyediting and Publishing, the English program offers certificates in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Medical Humanities; in Literary Journalism jointly with the Journalism program; and English courses play a role in the curriculum requirements of several interdisciplinary certificates, including Digital Engagement and Film & Media Studies.
Students who pursue a certificate in Copyediting and Publishing should desire to build on their strengths in writing, reading, and critical thinking. The undergraduate Copyediting and Publishing (CEP) certificate prepares you to work in a range of professional environments where close reading and editing skills are imperative to generating clear and effective communication. Courses in the program incorporate elements of textual, visual, and digital editing, literary and book publishing, and experiential learning opportunities as well as access to industry professionals.
Intended to complement a Bachelor's degree with more specialized coursework, the certificate will communicate to potential employers students’ readiness to meet the growing demand for editors in a variety of fields, genres, and professional contexts. Career opportunities include positions as digital editors, associate editors, copywriters, content strategists, and web content editors.
