Why study European Studies?
European studies is a faculty-driven initiative of UC's College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) that provides opportunities for studying the multifaceted nature of a changing Europe - its history; its languages; its cultural, political, economic, and social fabric; and its borders. European studies not only offers courses at the graduate level but also as an undergraduate certificate.
European studies (EUST) was created in 2000 with the generous grant of $150,000 from the Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fund as well as the support of the provost and the dean of Arts and Sciences. Since then, a collective of interested faculty from Asian, East European and German Studies (AEEG), Romance and Arabic Languages and Literatures (RALL), History, Geography, Political Science, English, Classics, Sociology, and other fields related to the study of Europe has developed a dynamic and growing program that has garnered highly competitive national and regional funding, including grants from the Ohio Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
We offer courses and certificates at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses and other events are open to all who are interested in European studies.
Admission Requirements
Students already pursuing a degree in any college at UC can add the certificate to their program. Be sure to submit a declaration of the certificate program using our online form.
In addition, you must meet with the program director so that they are aware that you are pursuing the certificate and can advise you appropriately. Do this early enough to avoid delay in obtaining your certificate.
Students not currently pursuing a degree may declare the certificate after establishing non-matriculated status.

It is also an essential building block for advancing your professional career. Whether you are planning to join international companies in the fields of engineering, industry, or health, or are interested in journalism, inter-cultural communication, education, tourism and travel, museum culture, e-media, or environmentalism, a European Studies certificate will give you critical qualifications and help you stand out in the job market. It is also an indispensable foundation for graduate school in fields like languages & literature, history, political sciences & international relations, sociology, and the fine arts.

Make sure that you have declared the certificate program online. Next, make sure that the certificate program director is aware of when you are finishing the program. If you are pursuing another bachelor's degree, then your certificate will be reviewed at the time that you submit your separate degree application.
